An Open Love Letter to a Transgendered Teen

I know what it’s like to be a 15 year old full of dreams

Dear Jazz,jazz-jennings-transgendered-teen

I hope this meets you well.

We have never met, and probably never will. And yet, there is so much about you I think I already know.

I know what it’s like to be a 15 year old full of dreams, hopes and aspirations of a better future ahead. I also know what it’s like to feel lost and misunderstood, and in need of unadulterated acceptance from those around you. I’m a full grown adult, and yet, these thoughts still flood my mind every now and again, but there’s a major difference now, one I’d like to share with you at this time, if you would let me….

I first heard of you a few weeks ago, after news of your upcoming reality show, I am Jazz, broke out. And to soften things a bit, let’s just say that Nigerian parents were not “having it” (think stirred up Coke bottles foaming at the mouth). The actual thought of a transgendered child becoming the centre of their little ones attention was not an easy pill to swallow, and they took to the net to express their angst in full force.

“We are barely hanging on to the few morals we have in this society. Why deal with this? Not now.”

I’ll admit that I was a strapped-in passenger on this bandwagon; one of the many who rejoiced when the show was pulled down from being aired too.

Then, one day, I watched this video and everything changed:

For the first time, you ceased from being that transgendered teen in that TLC show.

I could now see you for who you really are… a real-life person. A teenager, with real tangible emotions, desires and ideas, so thick you can cut them with a knife. A person with so much to offer, so much potential to positively change the world as we know it. A vessel of hope, molded beautifully with the tender hands of care and grace.

I’m sure you have a lot of questions centered on the “mistake” made during your creation. And I wish I could say I have them all figured out for you, but I don’t. What I do know is that the answer you seek lies with the One who created you inside-out, the One who longs to take you away from all the noise and show you great and mighty things about you, but only if you’ll let Him.

It is my prayer for you that you fully understand what it feels like to be loved by Love Himself, the One true author of Perfection who makes no mistakes. To recognize that the same Person who made the sunsets and the stars made you for Himself (Romans 11: 36) for His pleasure (Revelations 4:11). That, my friend, will lead you to finding your purpose, identity and freedom as He originally intended.

I hope this finds a place in your heart.

Lots of love,
